Cambodia, Japan, and Thailand set the scene for this Canada Book Awards winning tale of deception, revenge, betrayal, …and trust. A Cambodian-American woman returns to Phnom Penh 40 years after witnessing the brutal humiliation of her beloved father and is suddenly faced with an opportunity to exact revenge. In the process, she helps an Australian expat escape his failing life in Japan while uncovering an international ring of antiquities smugglers in Thailand. The ensuing cat-and-mouse chase across Asia encompasses a collection of disparate multiple-identity characters who find their lives suddenly transformed as they too seek revenge, trust, or new identities.
